Remember we brought you news that Recoil has recorded two covers for a forthcoming Talk Talk tribute album? Well we can now bring you much more news about the accompanying book which Alan has also contributed to, with its expected publication scheduled for Spring 2012.

'The Spirit of Talk Talk' is a richly illustrated, beautifully designed publication celebrating the music and art of the legendary group Talk Talk.

Celebrated illustrator, and Talk Talk cover artist, James Marsh has remastered and chronicled all of the iconic artwork that he produced for the band throughout their 10 year reign in the 80's. The book will feature James original cover concept sketches, hand written lyrics from Mark Hollis, as well as various ephemera, posters, and related items of interest to fans. It will also feature unseen group photos from 3 sessions with photographer Richard Haughton.

Renowned rock music writer and enormous Talk Talk fan Chris Roberts is writing the main essay and there are also 80 written contributions from bands, label owners, DJs and creatives, all of whom have been inspired or influenced by the music and art of Talk Talk.

Says Alan: "The Spirit of Talk Talk has been lovingly compiled with unqualified enthusiasm and meticulous research. It is the most comprehensive retrospective look at the legacy of one of Britain's most important, influential and inexplicably underrated bands. Long overdue and unmissable. Sign up now to register your interest and to get it published as soon as possible."

As Alan suggests, please visit the official website and register your interest. Registering does not commit you to purchase the book but simply helps the publisher gauge the print run required. You will be kept informed about developments right up to publication.

Finally, regarding the album, this is now very close to completion with a large array of eclectic artists involved. We will be bringing you more news on this very soon.

07/11/11 - 'FAN' - new film featuring Alan Wilder interview

Now available to view at YouTube, a brand new Polish film directed by Grzegorz Radziejewski has been released featuring interviews with Alan Wilder, Gareth Jones, Adrian Sherwood and many others.

Shot in Lodz, Poland between August 2009 & November 2010, the film focuses on trying to explain the subculture surrounding Depeche Mode and its followers, how that came into being and what it all means. Alan recorded his interview for Grzegorz at the Andels hotel in April 2010 when Recoil visited Lodz to present 'A Strange Hour'.

Says Radziejewski : "Initially, the general idea of the movie was to portray just the fans. It seemed relatively easy, but it was not! The troublesome issue was how to depict the fans without showing their beloved band? This problem was solved as the former DM member, Alan Wilder, came to Lodz. He agreed to a long interview. While working on the movie I was given a unique chance to speak with several other people who also worked closely with the band."

'FAN' is a non-commercial project made without any budget, just with a lot of love & desire. Here at Shunt, we feel Grzegorz's team has done a great job creating this heartfelt documentary - not dissimilar in approach to Jeremy Deller & Nick Abraham's 'The Posters Came From The Walls'.

Watch 'FAN' and judge for yourself...

On November 1st, Dentez Lab and Shunt will release a limited edition, remastered DVD of Martin Vladar's documentary film which accompanied the AW / DM historic equipment, vinyl and memorabilia auction.

Thank you for all the feedback following our request for a response on this. As the original auction run proved so popular and to satisfy many who missed out, we have decided to produce this superior quality transfer of the film. Based on your comments, we are manufacturing a limited run of 1000 copies, with extra material available, entitled 'Alan Wilder Collected +'

Directed and edited by Vladar and featuring new artwork and photo manipulations by Akos Szenasi, the 'Collected +' DVD comes shrink-wrapped in a cardboard sleeve and includes 4 extra scenes of unseen footage - with more Emax demos from Alan, other outtakes which never made the final cut, a film review of the day at Zion in Manchester, and a 67-shot photo gallery. Total running time - about 62 minutes.

Omega recently made available the last of the 'Collected' DVDs from the auction which sold out within a few hours. As these have proved so popular and to satisfy those who missed out, we are thinking of producing a better quality transfer of Martin Vladar's 'Collected' documentary on a brand new DVD, with additional content and all-new artwork in a cardboard sleeve. This would include some extra footage with Emax demos from Alan, other outtakes which never made the final cut, a film review of the day at Zion in Manchester and a photo gallery. All running at about one hour in total.

Paul Kendall has released a new album called 'Angleterror', available now as a digital download. Paul, as you all must know, has been working with Recoil for many years now and recently accompanied Alan on his 'Selected Events' tour presenting 'A Strange Hour' around the world. But this is a man of many talents, and you can view his new viral video right here (no doubt filmed and edited by Olivia Louvel) where he 'kind of' explains his latest project.

The majority of the work was created between 2002-2007 during Paul's sojourn in Paris and informs the title. We love it here at Recoil central and highly recommend Mr Kendall's manglings. A mere 8 quid for 5 years work can only be a bargain. Immediate download of 7-track album in your choice of MP3 320, FLAC, or just about any other format you could possibly desire. Go get...

14/09/11 - DM's 'Devotional' drum kit makes a comeback!

We have some interesting and exciting news regarding Alan Wilder's 'Devotional' tour drum kit. The winner of the kit who secured it at a ridiculously low bargain price at auction recently has gone missing, and the drum kit is therefore coming back on the market!

This special kit with it's unique history spent 14 months on the road with Alan in '93 and '94 and was also featured in Anton Corbijn's live film of Depeche Mode 's 'Devotional'.

Alan comments : "The kit was purchased specifically when it was decided to include live drums as part of the recording of DM's 'SOFAD' and the subsequent decision to take that performance concept into the live arena. The advice I received at the time was that this Yamaha kit would be the most reliable, hard wearing, best sounding drum set for the job. And it certainly proved to be so. To enhance the experience and bring variety, I added two different and much sought after Noble and Cooley snare drums. I have used the drums many times since the tour at my studio in recording sessions for all the Recoil albums since 'Unsound Methods'. With some new skins and a nice polish, it will be ready to go, sounding as good as it has ever done."

The full drum kit will be up for sale again very soon. If you would like to make a (sensible) offer, please contact us immediately at: auction@recoil.co.uk. This option will only be available for a short time, after which the kit will be featured at eBay. Don't miss out!

The latest selection of items from the AW/DM - Collected auction, currently at eBay, are due to end in about 2 hours! Be quick and get your bids in as these extras will be gone soon. Everything posted at this eBay link is authentic and part of the full AW/DM collection.

We still have some more items coming up for sale over the next couple of weeks. Keep checking at our eBay page to catch the last of the drumming gloves, large drum skins from Alan's kit, drumsticks, 2 x Noble and Cooley snare drums - all used on DM's 'Devotional' tour. Also - more printed auction catalogues, 'Collected' DVDs, a Wurlitzer electric piano and other specialist valve equipment. Everything is either signed or comes with certificates of authentication from Alan Wilder. Be quick as these will go very fast.

(Note: If you want to support Alan, we strongly advise against buying any re-sale items which have appeared recently on other eBay pages. Not only is it disrespectful and in some cases unethical for auction purchasers to re-sell in this way, but the condition and authenticity of any of these items cannot now be guaranteed, unlike those on Omega's official page).

There are also one or two extra items of equipment up for private sale at http://auction.recoil.co.uk. Serious offers for these will be listened to - the point of contact is auction@recoil.co.uk.

The full colour official auction catalogue is still available as a downloadable pdf and everything that was sold at the recent 'Collected' auction will continue to be previewed at our website. Discover the full history and condition of the items plus read Alan's comments on each piece.

Over 400 lots went under the hammer as Alan Wilder sold a large selection of musical/studio equipment and memorabilia at auction in Manchester. Many items were very collectable and held special value having been used extensively in the recording sessions for classic Depeche Mode & Recoil albums, as well as live performances on the 'Black Celebration', 'Music For The Masses', 'World Violation' and 'Devotional' tours. Focusing mainly on the years between 1982 & 1995, this was one of the most exciting career sales ever to hit the public domain.

If you followed the sale online, we are sure you will agree that it was a fantastic event. There were around 150 people in the room in Manchester, and 600 registered online from countries across the globe, all bidding for the 422 lots of which 98% were sold. 87% of the items were won by internet bidders.

Thank you again from Alan Wilder, the entire Shunt team, Omega auctions and to everyone for taking part and helping to make this such an enjoyable event for all concerned. Alan forgot to mention Tom Carpenter & SImon Forsyth in his intro speech both of whom were really helpful with keyboard repairs and advice, so thank you both.

For a detailed report of the two days in Manchester, read Sideline's report here

Great news! Alan Wilder has decided to perform a virtually free concert immediately following the main sale event in Manchester on Saturday 3rd Sept at Zion theatre, as a thank you to everyone who is supporting the auction.

For the lucky few who are registering to attend the live part of the event, it will possible to stay for this performance as long as the theatre capacity at Zion will hold the numbers. In order to cover PA and projection costs, we are asking an extra £5 only for anyone who wishes to remain at the theatre for Recoil's performance.

This is a very limited offer - first come, first served. Registrations, which also gives you full access to bid in the auction plus a printed catalogue, are being accepted right now.

Says Alan: "The auction has been receiving unbelievable feedback with interest from fans all over the world. Many have not only helped with research and provided useful information, but are actively taking part to help make the whole venture a great success. I wanted to do something to show my respect for everyone who is investing in this memorabilia sale, and a performance & celebration seemed to fit the bill. I hope it will act as a big thank you and show of my appreciation."

We can also reveal that a special photographic exhibition is also being held at Zion over the course of the two days - this will feature many never-before-seen pictures by a selection of photographers, as well as some iconic Depeche Mode & Alan Wilder images over the years - all chosen by Alan and beautifully printed & framed by Fredrik Svensson. There may even be a chance to buy some of these at the end of the sale.

Finally - of course this whole auction event also takes place online. It will be broadcast in real time via the internet, and the Shunt team will also be reporting from Manchester with regular film clips, interviews, twitter updates, news on wining bidders & hammer prices. Each winning bidder will receive a free DVD of 'Collected' the documentary, directed by Martin Vladar (one DVD per person).

Alan and Paul Kendall will be attending on both days to answer questions, sign everyone's items, try the bar, and generally take part in the action... 'Professor' Kendall will give a talk about his own experiences in the studio - and in particular the recording techniques and mixing strategies used on Recoil's albums, as well as help demonstrate some of the equipment on display. We hope to have a DJ, a well-stocked bar and one or two other surprises.

1. The SECOND part of 'Alan Wilder - Collected' - a 2011 documentary film directed by Martin Vladar is now on-line. Click here to view part 2 of 4. Parts 3 and 4 will appear over the coming weeks.

Alan Wilder - Collected is a documentary about the musician and producer Alan Wilder. Vladar worked personally with Alan Wilder and his estate in the UK: at Wilder's Sussex residence, he discovered the house was filled with memorabilia spanning 35 years of a career spent in music, most notably during the 80s and 90s covering the musician's stint with one of the most famous & successful bands of all time, Depeche Mode.

Vladar's intent was not to create a biography but rather to understand Wilder by studying the producer's vast personal collection and relating it's significance to the many iconic photographs, TV and live performances where most of the uncovered items first appeared. We witness how the musician is reunited with his lost sounds when Wilder tries out his old Sampler after 25 years, and we discover which unreleased records he has the only copies of, along with access to the very first acetate pressings of Depeche Mode's 'Violator' and the '101' album recorded at The Rosebowl, Pasadena in 1988.

What we end up with is a moving, funny and ultimately fascinating retrospective of a career which has touched millions of fans. Alan Wilder is noted for his meticulous detailing in music, and that has clearly been translated into the production of this collection.

28/07/11 - New Alan Wilder interview and Book contribution

A new Alan Wilder interview has just gone on-line at The Electricity Club where he discusses many different things - including his thoughts on how the Recoil tour evolved and was perceived, his up-coming memorabilia auction, favourite studio gear, the recent Depeche Mode remix, and some interesting insight into the recordings of other Mode classics. Don't miss it.

________________________________

Alan has also contributed a few paragraphs for a new book 'The Palace and the Punks' by Tony Hill. He talks about his days pre-Mode, as part of Dafne and The Tenderspots and the character-building hand-to-mouth existence during the late 1970s that has stood him in good stead ever since.

'The Palace and the Punks' by Tony Hill
Published by Northern Lights Ltd (2011)

This is Hill's second book and deals with the history, as well as the rise and fall, of the 'Grey Topper' music venue in Jacksdale, a pit village in Nottinghamshire. The main section focuses on the late 1970s punk and new wave scene and contains original interviews with The Members ('Sound of the Suburbs'), Andy Scott and Steve Priest of glam kings Sweet, Chris Fenwick - manager of Dr Feelgood (who played their first gig outside of London at the Topper as featured in Julien Temple's 'Oil City Confidential'), Jet Black who talks about The Stranglers as an unsigned band in 1976 (using his ice cream van as a tour bus), Roddy Radiation of The Specials, the UK Subs, Depeche Mode's Alan Wilder, Eddie from punk originals The Vibrators (describing being there at the one of the most famous moments in rock history the Sex Pistols debut gig at St Martins college of art in 1975!), the legendary punk rock festival at the 100 Club and loads of first hand Topper tales.

________________________________

Alan's quote from the book : "As a young man I held an unwavering conviction (with hindsight, a kind of arrogance) that to become a successful musician was the one and only thing I would ever achieve. Part of this tunnel vision resulted in me joining up with Graham Smith and Dafne Nancholas. These two were playing 5 nights a week at 'Obelix' - a specialist restaurant serving Galettes just off the Portobello Rd. They were playing a mixture of jazz, R and B (in the traditional sense) and blues etc. I was roped on on keyboards for a few quid in my pocket and a free cheese, ham and tomato pancake at the end of the night (I got so sick of those things). We were also starting to write our own songs and, quite cynically, jumped onto the new wave bandwagon after the explosion that had been punk rock. Having auditioned numerous drummers and bass players, the line up that became Dafne and The Tenderspots was completed with Nick Monas on drums ( a highly precocious, technically brilliant player who had absolutely no sense of 'less is more') and Steven Hughes (ex Burlesque) on bass. It was an odd mix and the music we came up with was inevitably bizarre - a mixture of quirky, stylised, convoluted new wave jerkyness (a la XTC) mixed with jazz-rock double bass drum fusion, all fronted by Dafne herself singing from a blues and soul background. Contrived? You bet.

After many weeks rehearsing on Graham and Daf's houseboat in Datchet, we branched out from 'Obelix', starting procuring shows up and down the country and managed to get a rep from MAM records along. A chap called Dominque De Souza (I think) fell for it and actually gave us a record deal. After making some studio demos at MAM's expense, we were encouraged to record a final version of 'Disco Hell' - the one and only single which was ever released. During the next 18 months, numerous drummers and bassists came and went but the core of Graham (gtr), Dafne and myself remained while we desperately tried to re-invent the group a number of different ways. Finally, after an uphill struggle, a fracas broke out over the ownership of the PA system and that was that.

I think Graham and Dafne (who were an item - never a good thing in a band) moved out to LA to help reduce the effect of Dafne's unfortunate arthritis. I met up with them briefly one time during a Depeche Mode tour when they showed up at a show out there - a rather awkward aftershow meeting where we exchanged a few pleasantries and that was the last I heard.

I do look back at those character-building times, along with my other struggles and various unsuccessful ventures, with great fondness and appreciation of the grounding those experiences supplied. I remember supporting The Damned at the Wolverhamption Lafayette club once, which was a challenge:) In fact, that was the night I first heard 'Warm Leatherette' by The Normal which left a very strong impression - sounded like it had just landed from outer space. The Tenderspots played some real dives, some ok shows, drove all night in cold vans, lived on next to nothing - all the usual cliches. It didn't seem romantic at the time but I guess it was. I cite this period as the main reason for my subsequent appreciation of what I have been lucky enough to achieve since."

09/07/11 - The Alan Wilder / Depeche Mode Auction : updates

This summer, over 300 lots are expected to go under the hammer as Alan Wilder will be selling a large selection of musical / studio equipment, vinyl & memorabilia at auction. Many items are very collectable and hold special value having been used extensively in the recording sessions for classic Depeche Mode and Recoil albums, as well as live performances on the 'Black Celebration', ‘Music For The Masses’, World Violation’ and ‘Devotional’ tours.

The additional memorabilia such as Gold and Platinum award discs, leather clothing, rare acetates & test pressings, art proofs, posters, tour merchandise and much more, covers Alan's entire musical career, focusing mainly on the years between 1982 and 1995 and making this one of the most exciting career sales to hit the public domain ever. It is also the first time ever that a Depeche Mode memorabilia sale on this scale has appeared.

Says Alan... "Since my teenage years I’ve been an avid collector of interesting and unique musical items, including a ‘Steinway’ Grand piano, synthesisers such as the ‘Minimoog’, ‘Arp Odyssey’ and 'Wasp', a ‘Wurlitzer’ electric piano and a Packard harmonium, plus ‘Manley’ &‘Telefunken’ valve amps and a ‘Manley’ limiter/compressor. There is one very special guitar and various ‘Emulators’ which were featured during the Mode tours, and I even have my old stage outfits, touring wardrobe and 'Devotional' drum kit in the sale."

Alan comments : "The concept has been expanding and hopefully we have created an exciting and unique event. Working with a professional company means we can control each aspect efficiently, keep buyer's charges to a minimum, include the live extras, and still be able to implement the on-line part of the sale which we understand will attract the vast majority of those wishing to take part. No matter where you are in the world, you have access to the auction in the most simple and straightforward way possible. If you do choose to come to Manchester for the live part of the event, you'll find the venue alone is well worth a visit: Zion Arts Centre is a converted congregational church from 1911. Now owned by Manchester City Council, the Centre is the oldest surviving building in the area. Although not listed, it is a large and magnificent Edwardian building of outstanding architectural merit which has made a significant contribution to the social, educational and cultural life of Hulme and Manchester throughout most of the last century. With its myriad of unusual and versatile spaces, interesting detail throughout, it has an atmosphere which we felt was perfect for the occasion."

This worldwide, all-inclusive fan-friendly event will incorporate a rolling film presentation ('Alan Wilder - Collected') about the fascinating history of everything in the sale. Over the course of the two days, some instruments such as the Knight guitar, Emulators and 'Devotional' drums will be set up to view and try out, as well as displays for many of the other items. Alan has decided to expand and fill in some blanks on his selection of favourite albums which recently appeared in an on-line magazine.

"Most favourite albums will signify particular points in one's life, which is why a lot of the records I've chosen come from a similar period - from late 60's to late 70's, when I was at my most impressionable. The 70's was a time when I was maturing, when I began to learn my craft working at a commercial studio as well as playing in bands, and when I ventured away from home.

As well as including a little sourced background info on each album, I have tried to reflect upon and describe their importance to me, and perhaps give a little insight into my own musical history at the same time.

I am obviously nostalgic but hopefully don't view these with my lager goggles on. For me, each stands the test of time and, like a fine wine, have matured and improved with age. So I hope you enjoy this selection. If you aren't familiar with some of these iconic releases, get out there and get yourself a copy immediately!"

30/05/11 - The Alan Wilder / Depeche Mode Collection Historic equipment, vinyl and memorabilia auction

This summer, Alan Wilder will be selling a large selection of musical / studio equipment, vinyl & memorabilia at auction. Many items are very collectable and hold special value having been used extensively in the recording sessions for classic Depeche Mode and Recoil albums, as well as live performances on the 'Black Celebration', ‘Music For The Masses’, World Violation’ and ‘Devotional’ tours.

The additional memorabilia such as Gold & Platinum award discs, leather clothing, rare acetates & test pressings, artwork, posters, tour merchandise and much more, covers Alan's entire musical career, focusing mainly on the years between 1982 & 1995 and making this one of the most exciting career sales to hit the public domain ever. It is also the first time ever that a Depeche Mode memorabilia sale on this scale has appeared.

The sale and live event will be conducted through Omega with the official catalogue available online throughout August, prior to the event on the first weekend of September. Soon we will provide direct links to Omega with clear information about how to bid, either on-line, by telephone or at the event itself. For the time being, you can get a sneak preview of everything right now at (www.auction.recoil.co.uk) and discover the history and condition of the items plus read Alan's comments on each piece.

A special free pdf catalogue is being produced and a collectable printed hard copy will also be available for a small charge.

No price indications will be offered before the sale begins, and therefore any general enquiries about prices won't receive a response. However, serious offers for items marked outside of the auction (for private sale) will be listened to - the point of contact is auction@recoil.co.uk.

--------------

Says Alan... “One of my resolutions this year was to start streamlining my set-up at The Thin Line Studios. My needs have altered a bit since laptops, soft synths and plug-ins have come to the fore, and even though I’m emotionally attached, passing on some vintage gear and historical items seemed like a good way to start.

Since my teenage years I’ve been an avid collector of interesting and unique musical items, including a ‘Steinway’ Grand piano, vintage keyboards, synthesisers such as the ‘Minimoog’, ‘Arp Odyssey’, a ‘Wurlitzer’ electric piano, plus ‘Manley’ valve amps, valve-driven ‘Telefunken’ amps and a ‘Manley’ limiter/compressor. There is one very special guitar and various ‘Emulators’ which were featured during the Mode tours, and I even have my old stage clothing, touring wardrobe, the 'Devotional' drum kit, drumming extras and other artifacts available.”

I also decided that, since I was having a clear out and with so many writing in asking for things, why not include some extra memorabilia which I have collected over the years - like my leather jackets, tour merchandise, rare records, promo items and even presentation awards. So I have expanded the concept and hopefully created an exciting and unique event.

We initially thought about eBay as I know many are familiar with that process, but the sheer scale of such a sale would have meant many difficult issues regarding accepting payments & shipping methods required to facilitate a smooth process. Using a professional company means we can control those aspects much more efficiently, conduct this special live event, and still be able to implement the on-line part of the sale which we understand will attract the vast majority of those wishing to take part. No matter where you are in the world, you have access to the auction in the most simple and straightforward way possible."

--------------

The event

The Shunt team have worked closely in conjunction with Omega to bring to you a worldwide, all-inclusive fan-friendly event incorporating a film presentation ('Alan Wilder - Collected') about the fascinating history of everything in the sale, plus a Q&A session with Alan, DJs, a bar and some other surprises.

The live part of the event will be held over the weekend of September 2nd & 3rd in Manchester (venue t.b.c.). There will be a a chance to preview all the sale items on the Friday, with meet & greet opportunities and so on.

Most importantly, the main focus of the event - the auction - has been designed to make the process as easy and cost effective as possible. Auctions can sometimes be inhibiting, stuffy affairs, often off-putting. This one won't be - it will be easy to follow, simple and fun to take part in, and with no hidden charges. Alan has insisted that any buyer's premiums or delivery charges are kept to an absolute minimum, with terms clearly stated for all to see in advance. We can assure you that we have negotiated the most attractive possible deal one can from a professional auction house which will guarantee a smooth and stress-free process from successful bid through to final delivery of your purchase.

Each winning bidder will also receive a free DVD of 'Alan Wilder - Collected'

--------------

Documentary

Alan Wilder - Collected is a 2011 documentary film directed by Martin Vladar about the musician and producer Alan Wilder. The 40 minute documentary came about in connection with a proposed auction scheduled in 2011.

The various boxes, tubs and chests each contained rare records, test pressings, acetates, stage clothing, unseen artwork, collections of magazines, press clippings, programmes, private notes and letters, as well as old synthesisers, samplers, guitars and many other items all of which had been catalogued and meticulously stored for posterity. Wilder also has a Steinway grand piano, zip discs with his own sound samples, his touring wardrobe, and the very drums used during DM's biggest tour of all time 'Devotional'.

We just received word that the Summerjam 2011 festival in France where Recoil would have been presenting 'A Strange Hour' has unfortunately been cancelled. The festival was due to take place on June 11th, however the promoters informed us that there were funding issues and various other complications which, despite their best efforts, meant that they were unable to see the project through. They are very disappointed to have let the artists and fans down. As with all festivals, the artists are always subject to the main organiser's plans and do not themselves control the events. Alan agreed to take part in good faith and we can only apologise to those people who bought tickets - full refunds will be made.

Recoil will appear on 12th June in Leipzig at Wave Gotik Treffen.

25/05/11 - 'Selected Events' : Recoil at Vintage Festival, UK

We are very excited to announce that Recoil will be taking part in this year's Vintage Festival in London on 29th July. Alan and Paul Kendall will be presenting a dynamic, slightly shorter version of 'A Strange Hour' - similar to the recent & well-received Short Circuit outing at The Roundhouse for Mute Records.

Clubs, bands, fashion, art, design, film, shops, vintage retailers, dance lessons, makeovers, workshops - these are the things that made Vintage 2010 so memorable - and this year the music and fashion-led celebration of creative British cool from the '40s, '50s, '60s, '70s & '80s returns with even more to offer.

The Vintage Festival 2011 ( www.vintagebyhemingway.co.uk ) will be taking place between Friday 29th and Sunday 31st July at London's Southbank Centre. The brainchild of designers Wayne and Geraldine Hemingway - design duo behind clothing label 'Red or Dead' - the 21 acre South Bank site will be transformed into a Vintage wonderland utilising the Hayward Gallery, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and The British Film Institute, as well as various shops, restaurants and bars along the Thames Embankment itself.

2011's Vintage will present an inspirational line-up of world renowned bands and DJs (most are still to be announced). Also featured will be a line-up of catwalk shows, a gathering of over 200 of the finest purveyors of vintage clothing, accessories and homewares in a marketplace spanning hundreds of metres along the Thames. Visitors will be able to get their hair + make up done in a iconic style, as well as take part in fashion, design and art workshops, with the best dressed getting a chance to strut their stuff on the Vintage Catwalk!

By night, the whole of the South Bank complex (which is also celebrating the 60th anniversary of the 1951 Festival of Britain) will be transformed into a series of evocative set-dressed venues, complimented by a flotilla of party boats cruising the Thames on a summer evening specialising in music from funk to electro swing.

The British Film Institute will also host three days of 20th century classic and iconic movies, public information films and documentaries.

Vintage reviews:

On Friday night - 'An Electronic Phuture' curated by Mark Jones and Martyn Ware - an electronic revue featuring cameos from new artists and legends from the day. (This is the part of the event where Recoil will feature.)

On Saturday night - 'The Sound Of Soul' curated by Eddie Piller - an array of guest vocalists including Soul legends, contemporary talent and the occasional 'curve ball' performing Soul classics with an orchestral backing.

On Sunday - 'Hit Parade' curated by Bob Stanley (St Etienne) - celebrating the legends of British song-writing with special guest vocalists re-imagining great British tunes with an orchestral backing.

07/05/11 - Depeche Mode - 'Remixes 81-11'

Don't forget to check out Alan's mix of 'In Chains' on the upcoming Depeche Mode remix album due for release next month.

Says Alan : "I have to say it was a tempting proposition to try and remix something for Depeche Mode after all these years, and I appreciated the gesture of being asked. It was requested that I choose something post-'Songs of Faith & Devotion' which proved an interesting experience, trying to choose a track from their more recent material, and a particular challenge since I had very little time to do the mix given I was stuck in technological limbo somewhere in the French countryside..! To help me decide, I asked Mute to provide stems from several short-listed songs, so that I could listen to component parts and make a more informed decision. In the end I decided that 'In Chains' could maybe benefit most from the Wilder treatment, hopefully expanding the dynamics and overall power. I thought the song and the existing vocal performance was strong (even though Dave's voice arrived with all its effects bounced together, so I was stuck with those).

The general experience was a bit weird and took me back to particular recording periods we spent together years before. I could imagine, through this process of listening to individual parts, how the original recording of 'In Chains' might have come together.

We ended up with two quite different versions of 'In Chains' and I'm happy with the results. I hope the fans will like them too."

The Quietus - 'Baker's dozen' :

Alan has also chosen his 13 favourite albums of all time, and tells us why, in an article presented by respected music site The Quietus.

07/05/11 - Talk Talk tribute album

Along with a series of special guests, Recoil has recorded a cover for a forthcoming Talk Talk tribute album & book. Talk Talk are one of Alan's favourite bands and this is a very exciting project with many well-known artists involved. We will bring you more details once everything has been fully confirmed. In the meantime, here is a comment from Alan :

"In direct opposition to their commercial decline, my interest in the group increased as their more avant garde leanings came to the forefront. 'The Colour Of Spring' (1986) was an excellent but transitional album where one could visibly see the band mutating from well-crafted, intelligent pop into something much deeper and more thought- provoking. It reflected producer Tim Friese-Greene's more fluid and melodic keyboard arrangements with a far more expansive production. However, the revelation that followed - 'Spirit of Eden' - was still totally unexpected. This has to be one of my all-time favourite albums. Mind-blowingly brilliant in its diversity, minimalism, atmospherics, musicianship and topped off with the voice which found it's true position floating painfully over the top (in the best possible way). Whenever I'm stumped for something to listen to, I reach for this album to restore my faith in all that is good about modern music."

While critically praised, the album Alan speaks of was not as commercially viable as its predecessors and, after the equally uncompromising follow up ‘Laughing Stock’, Talk Talk disbanded. Now, many are coming together to pay tribute to this underrated but highly influential band.

17/10/10 - New Recoil release available today : 'Want' - the Architect mixes

Following the release earlier this year of 'Selected', Alan decided to commission some extra remixes which are now being made available by Mute absolutely free!

3 new versions of 'Want' (featuring Nicole Blackman) have been expertly put together by Architect to form part of a special download package released today (October 17th 2010). Full details below.

Architect is the creation of German mastermind Daniel Myer. In 1993 he founded the legendary electro-industrial/EBM project Haujobb. Since then he has made a name for himself within the electronic scene and initiated many other projects such as HMB, Newt and Destroid.

Since 2007, he has been a permanent member of the renowned Swedish EBM band Covenant. Created in 1998, Architect and can be easily described as the most fascinating of Daniel's projects. Focusing primarily on minimal techno, powerfully distorted sequences and razor-sharp breakbeats, he manages to create a unique hybrid of electronica with smooth ambient soundscapes, rendering the results suitable for both listening and dancing.

Says Alan: "Having embarked on a series of live events earlier this year, I found myself re-visiting and re-working many of my favourite pieces. With this in mind, I also kept my ears open for interesting people to contribute to this process and quite early into the tour was introduced to Daniel and his array of projects. I spent many an hour in various hotel gyms, headphones connected, being strangely hypnotised by his work - in particular from Architect's recent album 'Consume Adapt Create'. I subsequently asked if he would be interested in taking part in some of the events we had planned and he and I struck up an instant rapport. His approach seemed to fit perfectly with what Paul Kendall and I were doing in the live arena, and that collaboration is planned to continue during Recoil's forthcoming North American tour. The inevitable result of this new-found friendship elicited this set of recently-completed remixes of 'Want'. No real guidelines were given - just that Daniel should do his thing to this track as it had never been remixed before and was crying out for some alternative treatments. I hope you enjoy these three variations on the theme and, like me, will appreciate the use of surgically placed sounds, haunting ambience and complex intelligent arrangements."

Also included in the package: a new film to accompany Daniel's main mix, using time-lapse photography and directed by the brilliant Dmitry Semenov. Dima's captivating short film features Daria Kuznetsova and Sergey Kochetkov.

Another extra is a downloadable photographic book, shot during Recoil's European tour between April and May 2010 by Ivana Dvorska. There is also an additional bonus mix of 'Jezebel' by Ehron VonAllen.

We hope you really enjoy this special pre-tour bonus release, and don't forget, if you want to catch Recoil and Architect in North and South America over the coming weeks go to:

19/01/10 – New Nitzer Ebb remix by Alan Wilder

‘Industrial Complex’. The song is entitled ‘I Am Undone’ and Alan’s remix is featured on a bonus disc, to be included with the album due for release by Major Records on January 22nd.

Says Alan: “My version of ‘I Am Undone’ was originally completed at a slower speed, an error made due to running the supplied files at the wrong tempo! (44.1khz instead of 48khz) However, I rather liked the happy accident and delivered my finished mix at the more sleazy tempo. I think it must have been a bit of a shock as Bon and Doug decided to speed it back up to its original speed. Bit of a shame from my point of view but…. oh well.”

For the remix go to: Shunt – the official Recoil Website

To coincide with the release of the new album, and also the Ebb’s support slot on the current Depeche Mode tour, Mute are releasing 2 box sets : the 5 CD CATALOGUE including all the Mute albums – ‘That Total Age’, ‘Belief’, ‘Showtime’, ‘Ebbhead’ (produced by Alan incidentally) and ‘Big Hit’, and the 3 CD COMPILATION – including ‘Body of Work’ and ‘Body Rework’. Both box sets will be available from January 25th.

Mute Store

Mute are also releasing for the first time a Nitzer Ebb collection of b-sides, remixes & rarities, comprising of 60 tracks. The digital album entitled IN ORDER is available now on iTunes.

Alan will be appearing at a few events with Nitzer Ebb either as part of Recoil’s ‘Selected’ Events 2010 Tour, or as part of the Ebb’s own Industrial Complex Tour. Try to catch some of the shows!
